This article is our top 20 caravan gadgets under $20 that make our life on the road travelling Australia easier: even though theyâre our most popular caravan accessories, theyâre by no means the most expensive.
Weâve always been reluctant to let âstuffâ into our car or caravanâŚ
âŚbut there are some small things that you can purchase that seem to make a big difference.
They reduce the number of steps in your set-up and take-down, or just make life easier in general.
After we released this episode of The Family Travel Podcast, weâve had listener questions about which products we use.
So here are our most popular caravan accessories (aka âcaravan gadgetsâ):
1. Tyre sealant in a can: Itâs like an extra spare tyre
Imagine this:
Youâre driving along, and you get a flat tyre. Itâs hot out. You have to empty the boot to get everything you need to change the tyre. The kids all have to get out of the car.
Doesnât sound like much fun does it?!
This is EXACTLY what happened to us at Lawn Hill National Park (QLD, Australia).
Thinking âwhat have we got to loseâ, I hooked up the aerosol can that I bought from SCA:Â
It sealed the puncture, got the tyre up to 25psi, and got us all the way back to Gregory where we changed to the spare.
Thatâs 90km on rough, corrugated road.
The true test was when we took the punctured tyre in to get repaired, and the guy was âno problems, we just clean it outâ
[This isnât just on my list of caravan gadgets⌠itâs a must for every vehicle!]
2. WikiCamps: The one app to rule them all
If there is one app every single traveller in Australia should use itâs this one.
Itâs helped us find camp spots, the reviews have helped us choose between different options (and work out which places you really donât want to go to), see how much people are getting charged, and the user photos have helped us see whether or not weâd get our van to fit.Â
One of the best functions of this app is the âfilterâ; we use it find exciting things like potable water and dump spots.
That being said â you can filter out camp spots that are free, so the first time we used it we saved more than the few dollars the app cost.
Itâs something we use to track our progress too⌠we like being able to see on a map how much of Australia weâve travelled as well as what the future has in store for us.Â
3. T-Spirit level: The best $5 youâll spend on caravan gadgets
Mounting a 5cm long spirit level, which shows if the van is level both side-to-side and front-to-back, saves a lot of yelling to each other during the caravan set-up process!
Our spirit level was inside the caravan on the benches next to the sink (which I can understand why). Whatâs funny though is that if I held a spirit level on the drawbar and it was completely level, the inside was a bit off.
So⌠whenever we pulled up somewhere new, itâd be a case of Natalie being inside the caravan and shout out to me whether or not the jockey wheel needed more winding.Â
T-Spirit Levels: Less than $5 from eBay
So⌠we got the van completely level one day, put a dollop of silicone on the draw bar, and then lined up the new T-Level until it matched.
Now, itâs a lot easier to know if we need the wheel-levelling ramps to level us out side-to-side
(Natalie can jump out and look at the drawbar while weâre moving into the site).
Also, itâs a one person job to wind up the jockey wheel to the right height⌠Natalie can be off doing her thing, while Iâm leveling it out. This is one of those caravan gadgets that means thereâs no shouting or divorce papers involved!
4. Electric fan blow heater: Caravan gadgets that make you warm and fuzzy
These little things are grossly inefficient for heating a house, but, for a small space like a caravan, they are gold.
Yes, theyâre no good for when youâre freecamping and having to rely on a battery (or generator), but the moment you roll into a powered site these little caravan gadgets make life all warm and fuzzy.
When we were travelling through the southern states of Australia and Tasmania, at $19.95 from Bunnings this was without a doubt our favourite purchase for less than $20.
5. Hose bags: Why didnât I have one of these before?
Seriously? A hose bag?
Yep.
Packing up and leaving an awesome campspot, when the sun is shining and the birds are singing, is bad enough.
But⌠you know whatâs worse?
Packing up from a dirty, muddy, and wet campsite. Rolling up a hose thatâs trying to behave like an octopus, get your hands all manky, then cramming into itâs storage compartment and contaminating everything else just makes it works.Â
Â
Hose Bags: Less than $20 from eBay
Getting one of these â being able to coil it up through the top of this mesh bag and then store it neatly â was life changing.
[Thereâs a reason that these are some of the most popular caravan accessories]
I wouldnât say it makes it a pleasurable job (or if it fits neatly into caravan gadgets), but these bags certainly make it way less worse.
6. Octopus clothes hanger: Caravan gadgets that make you feel old
You know youâve made it in life when you get excited about things to hang your washing on!
But⌠even though this thing is compact, you can hang quite a bit on it. It hangs pretty easily on anything too â a rail in the bathroom, the awning, a branch.Â
This is one of those caravan gadgets that really is a must as a traveller. Unlike hanging stuff on the line, if you have to pick up and move, and your washing isnât quite dry, you can carry this thing in, complete with the clothes still on it.Â
UPDATE:
Weâve since gotten our hands on some of the Slide nâDry Pegless Clotheslines from Adventure Awaits, which are some of the most popular caravan accessories for travelling families:
Pegless Clotheslines: Available directly from Adventure Awaits
7. A bucket with screw-on lid: The pick of clothes-washing gadgets
When we set-off on a lap of Australia we had one of these mini washing machines. It was one of our most popular caravan accessories when weâd have it out at the park. Definitely a caravan gadget that created a conversation!
But⌠it was pretty good if we were in one-spot and kept on top of things.
But, because of its size it was surprisingly labour intensive to catch up if weâd gone several days without washing.
We still needed to use the caravan parksâ washing machines to do do bedding, so, after persevering for over 5-months, we got rid of it in favour of just using the parksâ machines.
We naturally found ourselves actually resorting to handwashing in the one of the stereotypical caravan gadgets, the collapsible tub:
Collapsible Tub: Available on Amazon
This wasnât because of cost, but because of the inconvenience of waiting for a machine to be free at some parks just when we needed one, or having to wait around to get it out if we wanted to go do stuff.
Then:
The Scrubba Wash Bag!
This is a pretty cool invention⌠itâs like a dry-sack but itâs ribbed for your washingâs pleasure (itâs like an old school wash board inside)
Â
So when you add water, dirty clothes and a little detergentâŚyour washing is done in a flash.
Thatâs not me in the video, but Iâm sure you guessedâŚ
Scrubba Bag: from Adventure Awaits
Â
We ended up âupgradingâ from the collapsible tub to a bucket with a screw on lid.
So now we use this as the laundry basket, then fill it with water and some detergent when we need to do a load.
If we are about to go anywhere, we just screw the lid on so itâs watertight, and voila, the driving does the washing for us. When we get where weâre going, we just give it a rinse.
Iâd heard about this way of doing it before but it sounded pretty old school, but to be honest, itâs actually working out the best for us even as a family of 5.
8. Baby formula dispenser: The sleep saver
These are the miniature plastic containers which have separate compartments with a mini funnel on the top.
This is a must-have for the parents of little ones who are bottle-fed.
Being able to pre-load the right amount of scoops is a godsend when you have a baby screaming for milk at 3am, and also means when you go out on a day-trip you can take multiple serves without having to take a whole tin of formula.
Pigeon Formula Dispenser: Available from eBay for less than $20
9. Combination bike locks: Keep your other caravan gadgets safe
Getting three of these and setting them all to the same combination has been really handy.
Why?
We use these to lock the kidsâ bikes up, and they can unlock them by themselves each morning, but thereâs no keys to lose.Â
Combination Bike Locks: Best place to buy is Amazon
We use the same locks to chain up the Weber Baby Q overnight, or the table/chairs when weâre leaving a campsite for the day.
Because theyâre all the same combination, it doesnât matter if they all get mixed up.
These are one of things we discuss in our article: How To Prevent Solar Panel Theft: 3 Easy Options
10. Super strong suction hooks: Because wet towels belong outside
Suction caps with hooks on them. Not the little suction cups that just fall off, but the bigger ones with a push-button in the middle to make them really stick.
How much can these little caravan gadgets hold?
Â
Well, we use these to hang wet beach towels on the side of the caravan, or use them to hold the handle each side of a shopping bag so we can create a bin just outside of the door.
Super Strong Suction Hooks: Available from eBay for less than $20
11. Velcro tape: The most addictive caravan accessory
Velcro? Whatever you may call it (hook-and-loop fasteners, hook-and-pile fasteners, or touch-fasteners), oh yeah, Iâm addicted to this stuff!
To me, the best âstuffâ you can bring into your life is the stuff that makes it easier.
So where is the velcro?Â
- We have velcroed the alcohol hand-gel to the wall so it can live there all the time, but can be grabbed if needed.
- The remote controls are stuck next to the tv.
- Chloeâs iPod is on the bunk wall.
- The whiteboard marker is stuck to the whiteboard.
- Itâs anywhere that reduces the number of steps in setting-up or packing-up!
An added bonus? Everything has an obvious home, and little hands tend to put things back where they belong!
Rolls of Velcro Tape: Available from Amazon
12. Travel Australia With Kids (TAWK) Membership: You canât afford not to
Hate paying the extra fees for kids when you stay at a caravan park?
Itâs hard to believe that the little ones use an extra $10-$25/night each in resources isnât it?
As a family it definitely shapes which parks we stay in.
This would be the single most cost-saving item weâve purchased:
For less than $15 it has literally saved us hundreds of dollars, as participating supporter parks offer 2 free nights accommodation for kids.
This program really does create a win-win⌠we stay at supporting parks more, and they receive income when their sites would otherwise be sitting empty.
The most weâve saved in one use is $60!
TAWK Membership: Available directly from Adventure Awaits
13. Gardening gloves: Please. Do yourself a favour.
I donât think Iâll ever caravan again without using gardening gloves.
They come in pretty handy especially when packing up â rolling up hoses and power cords, folding the ground mat, as well as hitching up the vehicle.Â
Sure theyâre a bit dorky, but you know whatâs more dorky?
Being that guy who empties their toilet cassette with bare hands, all the while âstuffâ is splashing up all over their legs.
Blows me away how often I see this (like, pretty much every time I go to a dump point!).
Leather Gardening Gloves: Available cheaper from Amazon
14. Non-slip matting: Keep your caravan gadgets in one place
A roll of this stuff only costs a couple of dollars from AmazonâŚ
âŚbut is so useful when your house is on wheels.
We have it lining our pantry to stop our cans of food moving around, on shelves to keep our kettle and fruit basket in one spot, and my favourite â using it as a protective layer between pots, pans, etc.
[It stops them from sliding around everywhere, but also helps keep non-stick frying pans non-stick]
If youâre after a bit more style, I found this stuff on Amazon:
15. Anderson Plugs: Making solar panel connection easy
When youâre free camping, you wake up, itâs daytime but raining⌠the last thing you want to do is go outside, take the lid of the caravan battery box, hook up a solar panel with alligator clips, and then close it up again.
The worst thing is that itâs the cold and miserable days like this that you need to get up as soon as the sun peaks over the horizon, because you need every bit of solar you can get.Â
Connecting an Anderson Plug to the caravan battery and having it there permanently just makes life that little bit easier.
Itâs much easier to get out and connect the panels, and because itâs less of a rigmarole, it makes it easier to do it as one of the first steps when pulling up to a new campground.
Anderson Plug: Best price I could find was on eBay
16. 3M Command Hooks: Keep your other caravan gadgets organised
These are everywhere in our caravan.
It seems like every flat vertical surface is at the mercy of either these things or velcro.
You really do have to make the most of space in a caravan, and it really does make life easier if thereâs a place for everything and everythingâs in itâs place.Â
You know whatâs even better than where they are now?
The fact that I stuffed up with a few of them (and thereâs no holes from a misplaced hook).
We use these for hanging hats just inside the door, the kidsâ torches, our whiteboard, my sleep headphones (thatâs another story!), and even the fire blanket.Â
3M Command Hooks: Best place to get them is directly from Commandâs store on Amazon
17. Hose connector joiner thing
This is the little double-male-sides hose connection⌠itâs almost quite laughable how much value I get out of this little thing.
And I donât even use it to join hoses!
So whatâs it used for?Â
Well, when you unplug your house from the tap and the caravan, itâs still filled with water. I hate that. Itâs heavy, and water goes everywhere in the storage compartment.
If you try to blow the water out of the hose straight from the hose fitting, you canât get a good seal.
By putting this little thing in, instant good seal, and out goes the water!
Then, as an added bonus, you can join both ends together to make a sealed circuit. A light, empty hose where no water can leak out. Â
Hose Connector Joiner: Cheap on eBay
18. LED combination torch and lantern
This thing cycles between being a LED torch, to a super-bright LED lantern, to a quite dim orange night light.
This thing was an unexpected surprise!
We bought this just because we needed a new torch that was AA sized (to fit our suite of rechargeable batteries), and it gets used all the time. And we were in caravan gadget buying mode!
Handy for walking around at night, and outdoor table light when sitting around having a nightcap (which is hot chocolate of course), or a night light for the kids.Â
LED Combination Torch and Lantern: Less than $10 on eBay
19. Wireless weather station: The king of caravan gadgets
These are the things that have a digital display, plus a Bluetooth sensor you put outside.
In terms of caravan gadgets, it doesnât get more gadgetty than this!
But really, there is a practical side:
With caravans and camper trailers having such a small space inside, theyâre really sensitive to temperature changesâŚ
âŚopening a door unnecessarily can let the freezing or blistering-hot air in pretty quickly.Â
Knowing how the outside temperature compares to inside means you can better regulate the cosy climate youâve created for yourself inside, and also let you know if itâs time to open it all up and let the fresh air in.
These pretty much save on heating and cooling power, which is especially important when youâre off the grid.Â
Wireless Weather Station: We got this one on sale, looks like itâs a bit more now
20. Waterproof mattress protectors: theyâre like insurance
We learned the hard way that these are needed in a caravan just as much, if not more, than at home. We learned this very early on.
When thereâs small kids you can almost guarantee that every week thereâll be an accident, a nappy comes loose, thereâs vomiting, or a whole bottle of milk is spilled.
It throws the whole caravan into chaos, especially if itâs the night before travel day.
These really are your friend⌠it makes washing a lot easier, and avoids stinky mattresses.
Waterproof Mattress Protectors: Buy ahead of time from eBay (instead of an emergency trip to K-Mart of Big W like we did)
21. Jerry cans: I wish I had more
I was reluctant to buy one of these heading up the East Coast of Australia. Thereâs an abundance of petrol stations.
It seemed a lot of hassle to maybe save 1-2c per litre. Itâd take years to make itâs cost back.
Moving around Western Queensland and central Northern Territory though⌠wow.
We worked out that by having an extra 20L to get us between places with literally a 22c/L difference, one day it saved $16 in one go.
This is one of the few things I wouldnât buy online.
In store at Supercheap Auto seems to be the best deal going
UPDATE:
When were visiting Uluru, we filled up in Alice Springs and diesel was $1.53/L⌠and then $2.21/L at the one petrol station in Yulara.
I wish I had more of these things!
22. White board: Used more than we thought
Having a white board inside the caravan has been a godsend. We use it all the time.
Travelling full-time is deceptive. We use it to try and buy out an itinerary for a week or two in advance (which never goes to plan anyway!).
You think youâd be lounging around in deck chairs drinking beers at 12:01pm, but the reality is you want to do something, so does your partner, and then when your kids start rattling off everything they want to do today all of a sudden being at a 9-5 sounds pretty serene.

White board, wireless weather station, and velcro all in action at once!
We use it to list the things we want to do each day as a bit of a reality check, but also use it for things like homeschooling, and the kids keep themselves entertained with it.
Whiteboard: We bought ours from Aldi, so itâs a bit different to this one from Amazon
23. Anti vandal tap key [the naughtiest of caravan gadgets]
Controversial!
Why?
Well, thatâs what itâs called at Bunnings⌠everywhere else itâs called a thief-key!
Some places remove normal tap handles to (apparently) avoid vandals turning on the taps and leaving them running.
Personally, I think vandals are too busy smashing windows and doing graffiti to worry about messing with taps.
This modification is really to stop us gypsies from stealing 115L of water at a time!
So even though I havenât even used this caravan gadget, and WikiCamps has never failed to show us where we can get water without stealing, I figure itâs a good insurance policy
Anti Vandal Garden Tap Key: Available from eBay for about $15
Your Turn: What Are Your Favourite Caravan Gadgets?
Sometimes less-is-more, but with these items, weâve found that more-is-more.Â
When we hit the road, we were always trying to find out what were the most popular caravan accessories. Some of them are caravan gadgets that are useless⌠others we couldnât life without.
So what are your favourite caravan gadgets under $20?
Comment below if thereâs anything weâve missed:
Â
Hot water bottles. Good in the cold orcwhen you have hurt ur self from to much fun.
Hand held fan for when walking or sitting out and it to hot as well as a spray water bottle to spray n cool u.
Great additions Joanne!
We have just discovered half filling our metal water bottles with hot water, screw lid on and place inside a woolen sock â instant hot water bottle using things you already have in your van!
Great List guys đ
Youâve totally convinced me to buy some hooks; but before I do, can I ask â why two different types of hooks? Do they have different functions? Love your podcast btw.
Believe it or not we actually have three types! One is the standard type 3M hook⌠we use these for things like hats and hanging pictures. The second is the eyelet type⌠this way we can clip on keys etc and they donât fall off while weâre driving. The third is the suction hooks. These are to put on the outside of the caravan to hang towels, plastic bags, etc. I guess we could have put some 3M type hooks on their permanently⌠we just liked the idea of them being ones we could easily take on and off đ
The water thief tap key.
All you need is a shifting spanner and undo the washer barrel. Out comes the water. To stop, do it up. Simples.
Off cuts of fake grass is ideal to put in the bottom of caravan/motor home bins and front bootsâŚ.stops rattling and if gets muddy can be pulled out and hosed offâŚâŚ.
Now this is a winner, we have one and it is so versatile. It is the best door mat.
An extendable broom handle used diagonally across top of shower. If clothes are wet, hang them on hanger from broom handle with heater facing into shower. WallaâŚ.a clothes dryer.
Good one! I love things like this that are multi-purpose
A packet of balloons. Use to fill the empty spaces in cupboards and such and stop contents falling into a mess. Blow up to suit spaces.
