In this article we’ll show you the best caravan parks near the Spirit of Tasmania, Devonport.
When we were travelling to Tasmania on the ferry we wanted a caravan park with some specific features:
Distance to the terminal.
Ability to leave your van hitched up.
Family friendliness.
And:
A fair price.
Here’s the ones we ended up choosing.
1. Mersey Bluff Caravan Park: Our top pick for staying in Devonport near the Spirit of Tasmania
We stayed here the night before travelling on the Spirit of Tasmania from Devonport to Melbourne.
Why?
It was the most recommended.
And the result?
This is our number one pick for staying the night before travelling on the Spirit…
…and we’d definitely recommend it as an option when getting off the ferry too
Pros:
- A large grassy area which means there’s A LOT of drive through sites
- You can easily leave your van hooked up for a quick morning getaway
- It’s close, only a 12 minute drive from the Spirit of Tasmania
- Great owners… Luke guided us into our site and helped connect our cables and hoses!
- Quick walk to a great playground, restaurants and the lighthouse
- You can watch the Spirit of Tasmania come in (the kids loved this)
Cons:
- We didn’t have any!

2. Bay View Holiday Village: Very close and great value
We stayed here the night we arrived on the Spirit of Tasmania from Devonport.
Why?
It was very close. And cheap.
[About $38 for a site with an ensuite]
At 4.5 stars on WikiCamps, it’s not just us:
Pros:
- Very close… only 5 min (2.4 km) from the terminal
- Sites large enough to leave your van hooked up for a quick getaway
- Ensuite sites that are cheaper than most standard sites at other parks
- Craig the Manager was super helpful
- Great foreshore path nearby
- A quiet, clean park with mostly retirees… felt very safe.
Cons:
- Not a huge number of sites, so best book ahead
- Very minor, but our site was a bit tight to reverse into

Bay View Holiday Village is great if you aren’t self-contained and want a caravan park that’s close, inexpensive, and easy to get to and from the Spirit.
Come to think of it, we’re self-contained and still liked it!
3. Abel Tasman Caravan Park: A great option for families travelling to Tasmania on the Spirit
Caravan parks charge $5-$25 per child per night.
That adds up pretty quickly.
That is, unless you’ve got a Travelling Australia with Kids (TAWK) Membership and you’re staying a participating TAWK caravan park…
Like the Abel Tasman Caravan Park.
Pros:
- 2 night’s free camping for the kids
- If you stay longer, there’s ALSO 10% off for the whole party (even though it’s pretty cheap anyway)
- Only 4 min (1.3 km) from the ferry terminal
- Right by the beach at the mouth of the river (watch the Spirit sail right past)
- Next to children’s playground
- Little shopping centre nearby (IGA, RSL and pizza!)
- Lots of drive-through sites
Cons:
- Amenities a bit dated (although kept very clean)

Hi Gavin, thanks for your comment. At the time I recall the Wikicamps reviews weren’t that great, but it looks like it’s improved (now 3.0 stars) which puts it just behind the ratings of the ones listed here. I reckon I might update this post to add it to the list… cheers
